Materials and financials weigh on stocks in Toronto, U.S. stock markets mixed

TORONTO — The material and financial sectors weighed on stocks in Toronto as Canada’s main stock index edged lower in late-morning trading, while U.S. stock markets put in a mixed performance.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 8.01 points at 16,942.84.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 4.47 points at 27,905.13. The S&P 500 index was up 1.16 points at 3,137.12, while the Nasdaq composite was up 15.06 points at 8,636.89.

The Canadian dollar traded for 75.58 cents US compared with an average of 75.56 cents US on Monday.

The January crude contract was up 10 cents at US$59.12 per barrel and the January natural gas contract was up 1.4 cents at US$2.23 per mmBTU.

The February gold contract was up US$4.90 at US$1,469.80 an ounce and the March copper contract was up 0.50 of a cent at US$2.76 a pound.
