The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old woman, Somtochukwu Nwafor, in connection with the gruesome murder of a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area of the state.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the body of the victim was discovered mutilated and dumped in a soakaway pit.
Investigations revealed that the nurse had been lured to the residence of the main suspect, Chiemerie Obika Elobisi, under the pretense of providing medical treatment. Elobisi is currently on the run.
During interrogation, the police revealed that Somtochukwu Nwafor confessed to being Elobisi’s girlfriend. She admitted that he called her to clean up the blood stains after the nurse was murdered. She also disclosed that body parts of the victim were sold to various native doctors in the area.
Following her confession, operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) raided a shrine belonging to a native doctor, identified as Nwafor Chibunna Ofornwatadile of Itima Amawa Village, Ogbunike. There, they recovered suspected human body parts concealed in nylon bags.
The police have since launched a manhunt for Elobisi and other suspected accomplices and buyers of the body parts.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the act, describing it as “inhumane, criminal, and an affront to public morality and the sanctity of life.” He urged residents with useful information to assist in the ongoing investigation, assuring that all informants will be protected.
