The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday ordered six banks to provide the Inspector-General of Police with account documents and full transaction details, including inflows and outflows, linked to Omoyele Sowore from January 2024 to date.

Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order after the IGP’s lawyer, Wisdom Madaki, moved an ex parte motion to that effect.

In the motion, the IG stated that Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, is under investigation for alleged terrorism financing, money laundering, and fraudulent activities.

No fewer than 26 bank accounts linked to Sowore are said to be under probe, including accounts belonging to Sahara Reporters Media Foundation and the African Action Congress.

In the ex parte motion marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1757/2025, the IG listed Sowore and Sahara Reporters Media Foundation as 1st and 2nd defendants.

In his five grounds of argument, the IGP said Sowore is being investigated for terrorism financing, money laundering, and fraudulent activities.

That the complainant has commenced an investigation into the activities of the 1st respondent.

That the accounts for which the statements are sought are those being used by the 1st respondent for terrorism financing and money laundering.”

The applicant further argued that the relief sought was necessary to aid police investigations and that refusal would jeopardise the process.

Ibrahim stated that securing the court’s order was necessary to obtain the account statements and enable the police to investigate the alleged fraudulent activities of the respondents.

In his ruling, Justice Nwite held that the application was meritorious.

The African Action Congress (AAC) has strongly criticised Punch Newspapers for publishing a report aimed at discrediting its national leader, Omoyele Sowore.

The report claimed that a women’s group, HerRights Watch, attacked Sowore over his recent comments on the Nigerian Police. But AAC’s spokesperson, Adeyeye Olorunfemi, said the group does not exist and accused the Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, of creating fake organisations to attack activists.

In the response issued by Adeyeye via his Facebook page, he faulted the report’s credibility, accusing the newspaper of lending its platform to a “phantom group” with no verifiable existence.

He made it known that the publication failed to conduct basic journalistic due diligence before publishing what he described as a politically motivated attack.

“This is always the issue I have with the Nigerian media,” Olorunfemi wrote on his official Facebook page Tuesday morning. “Are our media houses so lazy that they can’t do the tiniest investigations before publishing stories from ‘organizations’? When did this organization start? Who are the characters behind them?”

Olorunfemi alleged that the group, HerRights Watch, was a creation of the Nigeria Police Force’s Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, whom he referred to as the “illegal IGP’s palace jester.” According to him, Adejobi has a track record of using fake civil society groups to counter criticisms of the police and attack activists.

“No Police PRO has created fake groups to attack genuine activists and concerns as much as Muyiwa. It’s his style,” he said.

He also criticized the editorial judgement at Punch Newspapers, accusing the outlet of deliberately amplifying disinformation under the guise of balanced reporting.

“What’s more embarrassing is that they, including the editor, know that the only way to get their ‘balance’ from this corrupt gig is to ask Omoyele Sowore for his reaction to a fake group. Being a lover of press freedom, Omoyele Sowore would always oblige. But there’s only so much nonsense that one man can take. This is getting out of hand.”

Olorunfemi went further to demand accountability within the media house, insisting the editor responsible for publishing the report be fired.

“Responsible journalism should include having the requisite knowledge on misinformation and detecting extreme rhetorics from organizations that are faceless. I think that’s missing with our media outfits and it’s a shame Punch Newspapers is also a part of this menace,” he said. “If pushed to the wall, we won’t hesitate to take steps to investigate how this phony statement from Muyiwa’s phony group and money to get this published exchanged hands.”

In a follow-up post, Olorunfemi broadened his criticism of the Nigerian media landscape, stating, “Nigeria media is the agenda setter for the corrupt ruling class. For example, it sold the narrative to Nigerians that subsidy was favouring the rich. It should go so the poor can enjoy. Scam!”

The controversy comes days after Sowore led a protest advocating for improved welfare for both retired and active police officers, a move that many saw as ironic given his long-standing critique of police brutality. However, the AAC maintains that its criticism of the force is rooted in structural injustice, not hatred for individuals.

Lagos, Nigeria’s bustling commercial capital, is a city full of energy, business opportunities, and round-the-clock hustle. But beneath the vibrant street life and neon-lit nightlife lies a darker reality—pockets of danger where crime thrives unchecked.

Here are 15 dangerous areas in Lagos where you should shine your eyes and proceed with extreme caution:

  1. Agege Under Bridge
A hotbed for criminal activity. Hoodlums operate in the early hours (around 4am) and late at night (from 9pm), targeting lone pedestrians.
  2. Oyingbo Under Bridge
Despite being near a police station, this area is a haven for bag snatchers and phone thieves. Victims often get no justice.
  3. Obalende Bridge
Pickpockets roam freely here both day and night. Beware of “One Chance” buses, where fake commercial drivers rob passengers mid-journey.
  4. Oshodi Under Bridge
Infamous for armed robbery and extortion. Gangs operate in groups, making it unsafe for commuters, especially at night.
  5. Ikeja Under Bridge
A major transportation hub, but also a den of criminals disguised as regular passengers. Stay alert and avoid displaying valuables.
  6. Iyana Iba Market Area
Home to a syndicate of pickpockets who fear neither police nor daylight. Robbery is common both in the early morning and at night.
  7. Okokomaiko
Nicknamed the “Headquarters of Pickpockets” in Lagos West. Thieves operate openly near the police station—often with zero consequences.
  8. Orile Bus Stop
Another hotspot for “One Chance” robbers and early-morning muggers. Crowds offer little protection here.
  9. Ijora 7-Up
A notorious zone where hoodlums dominate. Frequent cases of bag snatching and robbery in broad daylight.
  10. Idumota
Considered the “Headquarters of Crime” in Lagos. Despite being a commercial hub, crimes of all kinds—from pickpocketing to armed robbery—are rampant. Even security forces struggle to control the area.
  11. Mushin (a.k.a. Mushin Olosha)
An epicenter of criminal activity. Day or night, expect anything from phone snatching to violent street robberies.
  12. Ojuelegba
A lively part of town that turns dangerous at night. High crime rates and chaotic scenes make it risky for lone individuals.
  13. Ojodu-Berger
Criminals posing as commuters rob people at gunpoint. Bag and phone snatching is common on footbridges and bus stops.
  14. Shomolu-Bariga Axis
Street urchins and area boys dominate here. Reports of daylight robbery are frequent, and victims often lose phones and wallets.
  15. Fadeyi
A known trouble spot with recurring cases of thuggery, pickpocketing, and violent attacks both in the morning and at night.
  16. Mile 2
Criminals often break into cars during traffic. Violent robbery and pickpocketing are regular occurrences.

The Senate, South East caucus, has called on President Bola Tinubu, to immortalize the achievements and lifetime of the chairman, Defunct National Electoral Commission, NEC, Late Professor Humphery Nwosu.

The appeal followed a failed motion raised on Wednesday, to immortalize Prof. Nwosu who conducted the annulled June 12, 1992 elections during the military era.

Correspondent Kunle Ojo reports that the Senator representing Abia South, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, had earlier brought before the Senate, a motion with prayers that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Headquarters be named after the Late NEC chairman and to give Late Humphrey Nwosu, a national honor by Mr. President as well as giving him a minute silent in the floor of the Senate, as a sign of honor for him.

After a fierce debate, some of the senators were of the opinion that Late Professor Nwosu failed to declare the winners of the June 12, 1992 elections in his entire lifetime, hence he did not deserve National Honour.

However, other senators who spoke in favour of the motion maintained that the chairman of the defunct NEC, did courageously in conducting the most credible elections in the history of Nigeria.

They posited that if the June 12 elections did not hold even against all odds there would not be a result to clamour for.

At the end of the argument, the prayers were put to voice vote by the Deputy Senate president, Senator Barau Jibril, as the first two prayers were not supported by the majority.

A one minutes silence was also observed to honour the former INEC Chairman.

After the debate, the South East Caucus of the Senate addressed the journalists appealing to Mr President to honour Late Professor Humphery Nwosu who they said laid a good foundation for the present democracy.

They said their appeal was formed in their belief that as a Democrat President Bola Tinubu would grant the professor of political science national honour and name INEC Headquarters after Late professor Humphrey Nwosu.

The late INEC Chairman will be laid to rest today in his hometown in Anambra state.
