North American stock markets open trading higher, loonie up

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index started the trading day higher, boosted by the financial and industrial sectors, while U.S. stock markets also climbed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 148.82 points at 14,790.93.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 288.71 points at 24,422.49. The S&P 500 index was up 33.45 points at 2,911.93, while the Nasdaq composite was up 66.30 at 8,796.46.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.68 cents US compared with an average of 71.16 cents US on Monday.

The June crude contract was up a penny at US$12.79 per barrel and the June natural gas contract was up seven cents at nearly US$1.99 per mmBTU.

The June gold contract was up US$3.00 at US$1,726.80 an ounce and the July copper contract was up two cents at nearly US$2.37 a pound.
