Governor Lalong Condemns Killing Of 20-year-old Varsity Student In Plateau By Army Personnel

Governor of Plateau State, Simon Bako Lalong, has condemned the killing of Rinji Peter Bala, a 20-year-old student of University of Jos, by a personnel of the Nigerian Army in the state.

Bala was first arrested by vigilantes alongside six others for violating the lockdown order put in place to stop the spread of Coronavirus but was soon shot dead despite establishing his innocence.

The matter has sparked public outrage with Nigerians demanding justice using the hashtag #JusticeForRinji.

The army has claimed responsibility for the death, apologising and calling it a “mistake”.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Governor Lalong said he has launched an investigation into the matter to ensure that justice was served.

He said, “I am shocked and saddened by the death of Mr Rinji Peter Bala, who was said to have been shot by security personnel along Zaria Road, Jos, on 12th May 2020.

“I have directed that thorough investigation be carried out to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing of the young man.

“Those found culpable will face the law of the land. I appeal for calm and commiserate with the family of late Rinji Bala. I’ll ensure we get #JusticeForRinji.”
