The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association are discussing plans to allow players the opportunity to wear a statement on social justice on the back of their jerseys when the season restarts in Orlando, Florida, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The statement would replace a player’s last name on the back of his jersey.
A group text message sent to players Saturday night illustrated the early plans in conjunction with the NBA, the NBPA and Nike, saying “look out for details in the coming days.”
Earlier this month in England, the Premier League replaced player names on the back of jerseys with the phrase “Black Lives Matter” for its first soccer matches after resuming amid the coronavirus pandemic. Jerseys will also feature a sleeve patch for the rest of the season.
The NBA on Friday released its schedule for games in Orlando with the season resuming July 30 with two games, followed by six more the next day.
