TORONTO — North American stock markets surged higher in early trading in the wake of a stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs report.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 259.98 points at 15,775.20.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 434.84 points at 26,169.81. The S&P 500 index was up 45.24 points at 3,161.10, while the Nasdaq composite was up 135.94 points at 10,290.57.
The Canadian dollar traded for 73.60 cents US compared with 73.38 cents US on Tuesday.
The August crude contract was up 52 cents at US$40.34 per barrel and the August natural gas contract was up two cents at US$1.69 per mmBTU.
The August gold contract was down US$4.30 at US$1,775.60 an ounce and the September copper contract was up less than a penny at nearly US$2.74 a pound.
