Financials and energy boosts S&P/TSX composite as vaccine hopes remain

TORONTO — The Toronto market closed in positive territory on Tuesday, while U.S. markets were mixed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 139.51 points to 16,615.37.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 262.95 points at 29,420.92. The S&P 500 index was down 4.97 points at 3,545.53, while the Nasdaq composite was down 159.94 points at 11,553.86.

The Canadian dollar traded for 76.82 cents US compared with an average of 77.10 cents US on Monday.

The December crude contract was up US$1.07 at US$41.36 per barrel and the December natural gas contract was up nine cents at US$2.95 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was up US$22.00 at US$1,876.40 an ounce and the December copper contract was down less than a tenth of a cent at US$3.16 a pound.
