Transfer Talk: Mourinho, Roma eye Madrid’s Ceballos

The summer transfer window was unlike any other; see all the major deals and check out how we graded the biggest signings. And just because the window is shut until January, that doesn’t mean the rumours won’t keep coming. Here is the latest gossip and speculation.

TOP STORY: Roma eyes Madrid’s Ceballos

AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho is interested in a move for Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos, according to El Nacional.

Los Blancos reportedly value the midfielder at €20 million and while his former club Real Betis are also said to be interested, they would be unwilling to match that pricetag. Meanwhile, Mourinho is said to be keen on adding the Spain international to his squad as a “key” to his plans in the January transfer market.

Ceballos, 25, spent the past two seasons on-loan at Arsenal before returning to the Bernabeu this season. He joined up with Spain for the Olympics in the summer and suffered an ankle injury as his side went home with a silver medal. He is yet to return to action following his injury and is expected to be back in mid-November.

Roma have put in a huge investment with the aim of a return to Champions League football, already signing Tammy Abraham, Rui Patricio, Matias Vina, Eldor Shomurodov, Roger Ibanez and Bryan Reynolds.

However, losses to Lazio and Juventus in the league have shown more reinforcements could be necessary whilst a 6-1 defeat to Bodo/Glimt in the Europa Conference League has also brought criticism onto Mourinho.

10.55 BST: After his stellar weekend performance with a hat trick against Man United, a reminder that Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah says that his future at the club is not in his hands.

Salah, 29, the league’s joint-top scorer this season with 10 goals, has a contract with Liverpool until June 2023.

“If you ask me, I would love to stay until the last day of my football career. But I can’t say much about that, it’s not in my hands,” he told Sky Sports last week. “It depends on what the club want, not on me. At the moment I can’t see myself ever playing against Liverpool. That would make me sad.

“It’s hard, I don’t want to talk about it, but it would make me really sad… but let’s see what will happen in the future.”

10.06 BST: Journalist Nico Schira says that a number of top clubs want to sign Porto winger Luis Diaz.

Diaz, 24, has seven goals in 11 games this season and has attracted the likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, as well as Newcastle (who now have funds after their Saudi-backed takeover.)

The Colombia international has brought on super-agent Pini Zahavi to help him in the next stage of his career, but has an €80m release clause which Porto will insist on being paid.

09.22 BST: Real Madrid veteran Marcelo will depart the club in the summer says El Nacional.

Marcelo, 33, is coming to the end of his career and wants to head back to Brazil to play for Fluminense before he retires.

The left-back began his career at the club before moving to Madrid in 2007.

08.30 BST: Erling Haaland will command wages of at least £30m if he leaves Borussia Dortmund for a new club next summer, sources have told ESPN, with Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Real Madrid all in the race to sign the Norway forward.

Haaland, 21, can reportedly leave Dortmund at the end of this season if a club triggers his €75m ($87m) release clause at Signal Iduna Park. Sources have told ESPN the fee will be inflated by a significant payment to Haaland’s representatives for brokering a deal.

ESPN has been told that senior figures from interested clubs have been made aware that Haaland expects a pay deal that would see him earn in excess of £500,000-a-week. ESPN has contacted the Haaland camp for a response to the figures.

Despite the potential cost of any deal to sign Haaland, who rejected a move to United during the 2019-20 winter transfer window by opting instead to join Dortmund from FC Salzburg, he remains a priority target for Europe’s leading clubs.
