Winter Olympics 2022: The action from the Games in Beijing

The 2022 Winter Olympics is officially underway in Beijing. The opening ceremony began the festivities, and now we’re on to the first full day of sports.

On Friday, figure skater Nathan Chen helped the United States to an early lead in the team competition.

Tonight’s most notable event: American Jamie Anderson will begin her attempt at a three-peat in women’s snowboard slopestyle. Qualifying starts at 9:45 pm ET tonight.

Upcoming events (all times ET)

9:45 p.m.: Women’s slopestyle snowboarding qualifying

10 p.m.: Men’s alpine skiing training

11 p.m.: Women’s hockey prelims (Canada vs. Finland)

3:30 a.m.: Women’s speedskating 3,000 meters

6:30 a.m.: Men’s freestyle skiing moguls finals

Sporting the colors

Two of the most iconic American buildings — the White House and the Empire State Building — will be showing support for Olympians. The White House will feature red, white and blue lights while the New York City skyscraper will rotate colors of competing nations.

Hometown heroes

The New England Patriots and Boston College Eagles supported Olympians with ties to the area. Among them is BC grad Alex Carpenter, who was a member of the 2014 ice hockey squad that won a silver medal in Sochi.

Team USA is looking to defend its gold medal from the 2018 Games that came against rival Canada in an overtime shootout.
