According to Barrister Ege Obetta, an advocate for constitutional rights, the police claimed it is due to a lack of contact with police personnel in Calabar, the Cross River State, where the student was reportedly traced to.
After collecting N25,000 to track a missing University of Nigeria (UNN) student, Uzodinma Nkwachi Florence, the Nigerian police in Enugu State have reportedly told the family they cannot continue with the search.
Obetta revealed in a post on his X account on Thursday that Florence had been missing for over a month and could have been kidnapped.
He said the university’s Chief Security Officer initially refused to assist the missing student’s father.
“The University Chief Security Officer wilfully reneged in his duty and after persuasion during my phone conversation with him, the CSO grudgingly took the missing girl’s father to the Nsukka Urban Police,” Obetta stated.
According to him, the police demanded N25,000 as tracking charges, which the father paid.
“He paid the money and in less than 12 hours, the Police said they tracked the missing to Calabar. But according to them they cannot continue because they have no contact with Police personnel in Calabar,” he said.
Obetta further noted, “They asked the missing girl’s father to go to Calabar and rescue his daughter despite the fact that they were paid N25,000.”
He called on Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters Abuja, to intervene immediately, stating that the student had been missing for over a month.
“Adejobi, do something urgently!” he said.
When contacted, Enugu Police Command Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, asked SaharaReporters to send its query but had yet to reply to the message sent to his mobile line as at the time of filing this report.
