There is growing outrage among Nigerians following the introduction of steep toll fees at the newly reactivated Epe–Ijebu Ode Toll Gate, which began operations yesterday.
Under the new structure, SUV drivers are charged ₦1,000, cars pay ₦500, while trucks are billed between ₦2,000 and ₦2,500 — rates that many commuters have described as outrageous, insensitive, and exploitative, especially amid the country’s ongoing economic hardship.
The toll gate’s reintroduction comes at a time when citizens are grappling with skyrocketing fuel prices, inflation, and declining purchasing power. For many road users, the toll has added a fresh layer of financial burden on an already strained population.
Speaking to Lagos Reporters, several motorists and commuters expressed anger and disbelief at the pricing, calling it a direct attack on struggling Nigerians. Some questioned why such exorbitant fees would be imposed without any apparent consultation or public consideration.
“This is daylight extortion. How do you expect people to survive with this kind of additional cost on daily transportation? It’s unfair,” a commercial driver lamented.
Another commuter noted that the toll gate has become a “symbol of insensitivity” from authorities, urging an immediate review or complete reversal of the fees.
