Peter Obi’s Ally, Oseloka Obaze, Dumps Labour Party

Oseloka Obaze, a close associate of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has resigned from the party, citing deepening leadership crises and irregularities in the party’s recent primary election in Anambra State.

Obaze, a former United Nations diplomat and one-time Secretary to the Anambra State Government under Peter Obi, announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the LP Chairman of Ochuche Ward 406, Ogbaru Local Government Area, Awka.

The respected party chieftain attributed his decision to the unresolved internal crisis at the national level of the Labour Party, specifically the rift between factions loyal to Julius Abure and Senator Nenadi Usman. He also condemned the party’s inability to reconcile the differences, which he described as “untenable” for a party that claims to champion democratic ideals.

“The processes, conduct and outcome of the Labour Party governorship primaries held on April 5, 2025 in Awka, were fraught with outright irregularities, bordering on fraud and criminality,” Obaze said in the letter. “It was not in tandem with either the party’s Constitution and espoused core values or true tenets of democracy. As such, I hereby disassociate myself henceforth from the Labour Party.”

It is worth recalling that Obaze joined the Labour Party in 2022 after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), aligning his political trajectory closely with that of Peter Obi.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi himself has continued to comment on national issues, recently reiterating concerns over Nigeria’s rising levels of unemployment and underemployment, urging the government to prioritize job creation as a key step toward economic recovery.
