The security team of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has apprehended three students for violating the recent prohibition on the controversial “signing off” practice.
The university management had earlier announced an immediate ban on the activity, citing safety and security concerns. Traditionally, graduating students mark the end of their final examinations by having friends inscribe farewell messages and signatures on their white shirts—a practice the institution now considers unsafe and disruptive.
Despite the directive, some final-year students attempted to evade the ban by engaging in the activity shortly after their exams. Security operatives reportedly stormed one of the halls where the signing was taking place and arrested two female students and a male student.
In a statement, the management reiterated its zero-tolerance stance toward any activity that could jeopardize peace and order on campus. It warned that students caught participating in or organizing signing-off ceremonies would face stringent disciplinary measures, which may include suspension or outright rustication.
The university further urged students to channel their energy into academic and productive engagements, stressing the importance of upholding discipline and safeguarding the institution’s reputation.
