S&P/TSX composite index edges lower at late-morning, U.S. stock markets mixed

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index ticked lower in late-morning trading as weakness in the consumer staples sector weighed on the market.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 3.07 points at 15,572.04.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 7.06 points at 26,276.95. The S&P 500 index was down 7.58 points at 3,115.29, while the Nasdaq composite was down 43.18 points at 9,639.73.

The Canadian dollar traded for 73.98 cents US compared with 74.05 cents US on Wednesday.

The July crude contract was down 64 cents at US$36.65 per barrel and the July natural gas contract was down less than a penny at nearly US$1.82 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was up US$10.70 at US$1,715.50 an ounce and the July copper contract was up just over a penny at just under US$2.50 a pound.
