Financials help lift S&P/TSX composite, U.S. stock markets mixed; loonie down

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was up in late morning trading, helped higher by gains in the key financial sector, while U.S. stock markets put in a mixed showing.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 62.60 points at 15,631.24.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 173.01 points at 25,879.10. The S&P 500 index was up 9.89 points at 3,161.94, while the Nasdaq composite was down 8.42 points at 10,539.33.

The Canadian dollar traded for 73.61 cents US compared with 73.77 cents US on Thursday.

The August crude contract was up 46 cents at US$40.08 per barrel and the August natural gas contract was up five cents at US$1.83 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was up US$1.60 at US$1,805.40 an ounce and the September copper contract was up five cents at US$2.89 a pound.
