North American stock markets down in early trading while gold continues to shine

TORONTO — North American stock markets were down in early morning trading while gold prices reached a nine-year high and inched towards record levels.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 23.97 points at 16,147.09.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 100.57 points at 26,905.27. The S&P 500 index was down 3.11 points at 3,272.91, while the Nasdaq composite was down 9.59 points at 10,696.53.

The Canadian dollar traded for 74.55 US compared with 74.52 from Wednesday.

The September crude contract was down 29 cents at US$41.61 per barrel and the August natural gas contract was up two cents at US$1.70 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was up US$5.30 at US$1,870.40 an ounce and the September copper contract was flat at nearly US$2.93 a pound.
