North American stock markets down in early trading, loonie falls against U.S. dollar

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index fell in early trading in a broad-based decline as U.S. stock markets also moved lower and the loonie fell.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 92.01 points at 15,725.10.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 185.46 points at 26,577.67. The S&P 500 index was down 22.66 points at 3,214.26, while the Nasdaq composite was down 100.01 points at 10,532.98.

The Canadian dollar traded for 74.61 cents US compared with 74.86 cents US on Wednesday.

The November crude oil contract was up a penny at US$39.94 per barrel and the November natural gas contract was up six cents at US$2.85 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was down US$8.90 at US$1,859.50 an ounce and the December copper contract was down seven cents at US$2.92 a pound.
