Justin Gaethje punches his ticket for entry into pound-for-pound rankings

Justin Gaethje made a brutal entry into the ESPN rankings with a bloody domination of Tony Ferguson on May 9.

Justin Gaethje has arrived.

He might not think so, as evidenced by the disdain with which he tossed aside the interim lightweight championship belt moments after winning it with a brutal fifth-round TKO of Tony Ferguson in the UFC 249 main event on May 9.

“I’ll wait for the real one,” Gaethje said that night.

It might not be a long wait. With Gaethje’s victory came a promise from UFC president Dana White that the 31-year-old fighting out of Colorado will indeed get a shot at “the real one” in a fight with the 155-pound champ, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

For now, Gaethje has his placeholder title strap … and a spot in the ESPN men’s pound-for-pound rankings.

He enters at the bottom of the top 10 with an opportunity to move up dramatically if he can dethrone No. 1-ranked Nurmagomedov.

Ferguson, previously ranked sixth, drops out of the rankings.

That is the only significant change in the top 10. Henry Cejudo, who successfully defended his bantamweight belt with a second-round TKO of two-time former champ Dominick Cruz at that same UFC 249 event, remains at No. 3, because it’s tough to dislodge the two fighters above him, Nurmagomedov and UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones.

Other than that, a few fighters — Israel Adesanya, Kamaru Usman, Demetrious Johnson and Alexander Volkanovski — moved up a spot to fill in for the absence of Ferguson. The women’s top 10 remains unchanged.
