Energy and financials boost S&P/TSX composite, loonie climbs higher

TORONTO — The energy and financial sectors helped Canada’s main stock index push higher in late-morning trading, while the loonie continued to soar and topped 74 cents US.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 115.09 points at 15,351.30.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 116.52 points at 25,591.54. The S&P 500 index was up 3.44 points at 3,059.17, while the Nasdaq composite was down 50.10 points at 9,501.95.

The Canadian dollar traded for 74.07 cents US compared with 73.37 cents US on Monday.

The July crude contract was up 59 cents at US$36.03 per barrel and the July natural gas contract was up nearly two cents at US$1.79 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was down 30 cents at US$1,750.00 an ounce and the July copper contract was up a little more than a penny at nearly US$2.49 a pound.
