North American stock markets rise to start the trading week, loonie climbs

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index edged higher in early trading, boosted by gains in the technology sector, while U.S. stock markets also rose.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 3.35 points at 16,442.10.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 71.95 points at 28,678.26. The S&P 500 index was up 16.90 points at 3,500.71, while the Nasdaq composite was up 89.25 points at 11,760.81.

The Canadian dollar traded for 75.99 cents US compared with 75.80 cents US on Friday.

The December crude oil contract was up eight cents at US$41.20 per barrel and the November natural gas contract was down seven cents at US$2.71 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was up US$8.90 at US$1,915.30 an ounce and the December copper contract was up three cents at US$3.09 a pound.
