Sanna Marin: The feminist PM who says trans people have a ‘right to self-identify’

She was raised in a small town in the south-west of Finland called Pirkkala, by her mother, and her mother’s girlfriend. A “rainbow family”, she says, but under constant financial pressure. After her mother, who had grown up in an orphanage, divorced her alcoholic father, she survived on benefits. From a young age, Sanna Marin worked – mainly in retail jobs – to support her family.
