

TORONTO — Gains in energy stocks and the metals and mining sector helped lift Canada’s main stock index in early trading, while U.S. stock markets also advanced.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 61.07 points at 17,613.53.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 179.53 points at 30,195.04. The S&P 500 index was up 16.08 points at 3,703.34, while the Nasdaq composite was up 5.25 points at 12,813.17.
The Canadian dollar traded for 77.74 cents US compared with
77.47 cents US on Tuesday.
The February crude oil contract was up 35 cents at US$47.37 per barrel and the January natural gas contract was down 10 cents at US$2.68 per mmBTU.
The February gold contract was up US$3.00 at US$1,873.30 an ounce and the March copper contract was down two cents at US$3.56 a pound.
