TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index set a record high in early trading to start the trading week and U.S. stock markets moved higher after a strong U.S. jobs report on Friday.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 58.20 points in late morning trading at 19,048.52.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 369.24 points at 33,522.45. The S&P 500 index was up 53.05 points at 4,072.92. while the Nasdaq composite was up 172.79 points at 13,652.90.
The Canadian dollar traded for 79.90 cents US compared with 79.59 cents US on Thursday.
The May crude oil contract was down US$2.22 at US$59.23 per barrel and the May natural gas contract was down 13.9 cents at US$2.50 per mmBTU.
The June gold contract was down 40 cents US at US$1,728.00 an ounce and the May copper contract was up 16 cents at nearly US$4.15 a pound.
