TORONTO — North American stock markets fell at the start of trading, while the price of oil continued its move higher.
The S&P/TSX composite index was down 218.87 points at 14,561.87.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 466.08 points at 23,879.64. The S&P 500 index was down 60.33 points at 2,852.10, while the Nasdaq composite was down 186.70 points at 8,702.85.
The Canadian dollar traded for 71.30 cents US compared with an average of 71.89 cents US on Thursday.
The June crude contract was up US$1.10 at US$19.94 per barrel and the June natural gas contract was down nearly two cents at US$1.93 per mmBTU.
The June gold contract was down US$6.70 at US$1,687.50 an ounce and the July copper contract was down nearly three cents at US$2.31 a pound.
