North American stock markets open trading day higher, loonie slips lower

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index started the trading day by moving higher, helped by gains in the key financial and industrial sectors.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 36.56 points at 14,848.12.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 98.50 points at 23,981.59. The S&P 500 index was up 16.50 points at 2,884.94, while the Nasdaq composite was up 90.98 points at 8,900.10.

The Canadian dollar traded for 70.94 cents US compared with an average of 71.27 cents US on Tuesday.

The July crude oil contract was down 97 cents at US$25.52 per barrel and the June natural gas contract was down 12 cents at US$2.01 per mmBTU.

The June gold contract was down US$18.70 at US$1,691.90 an ounce and the July copper contract was up two cents at US$2.35 a pound.
