North American stock markets surge higher, loonie up

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was up in late-morning trading, buoyed by a broad-based rally, while U.S. stocks also traded higher.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 231.40 points at 15,591.06.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 414.57 points at 26,177.73. The S&P 500 index was up 49.25 points at 3,115.84, while the Nasdaq composite was up 141.99 points at 9,868.01.

The Canadian dollar traded for 73.61 cents US compared with 73.51 cents US on Monday.

The July crude contract was up 55 cents at US$37.67 per barrel and the July natural gas contract was down nearly six cents at US$1.61 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was up US$11.20 at US$1,738.40 an ounce and the July copper contract was down nearly two cents at US$2.55 a pound.
