TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index edged lower in early trading as the financial and materials sectors ticked down.
The S&P/TSX composite index was down 23.44 points at 15,598.96.
U.S. stock markets were closed in observance of Independence Day.
The Canadian dollar traded for 73.69 cents US compared with 73.61 cents US on Thursday.
The August crude contract was down 53 cents at US$40.12 per barrel an the August natural gas contract was little changed at US$1.73 per mmBTU.
The August gold contract was down US$3.00 at US$1,787.00 an ounce and the September copper contract was down nearly three cents at US$2.72 a pound.
