Financial sector weighs on Toronto market, U.S. stock markets mixed

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index edged lower in early trading, weighed down by losses in the financial sector, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 10.22 points at 15,618.97.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 85.85 points at 25,981.43. The S&P 500 index was down 1.23 points at 3,168.71, while the Nasdaq composite was up 54.85 points at 10,547.35.

The Canadian dollar traded for 73.98 cents US compared with 73.87 cents US on Wednesday.

The August crude contract was down 29 cents at US$40.61 per barrel and the August natural gas contract was up nearly five cents at US$1.87 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was up US$1.10 at US$1,821.70 an ounce and the September copper contract was up four cents at nearly US$2.87 a pound.
