TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was lower at the close as the loonie posted further gains against the weakening U.S. dollar.
The S&P/TSX composite index was down 25.70 points at 16,705.79, although it gained 1.1 per cent for the week.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 205.40 points at 28,697.67. The S&P 500 index was up 24.16 points at 3,508.71, while the Nasdaq composite was up 78.76 points at 11,704.10.
The Canadian dollar traded for 76.35 cents US compared with 76.17 cents US on Thursday.
The October crude contract was down seven cents at US$42.97 per barrel and the October natural gas contract was down five cents at about US$2.66 per mmBTU.
The December gold contract was up US$42.30 at US$1,974.90 an ounce and the December copper contract was up nearly three cents at US$3.02 a pound.
