North American stock markets up in early trading, loonie continues climb

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was up in early trading as U.S. stock markets climbed higher and the loonie continued its rise against the U.S. dollar.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 57.11 points at 17,606.03.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 197.55 points at 30,243.92. The S&P 500 index was up 24.32 points at 3,687.78, while the Nasdaq composite was up 97.98 points at 12,475.85.

The Canadian dollar traded for 78.56 cents US compared with 78.31 cents US on Friday.

The January crude contract was up 41 cents at US$46.98 per barrel and the January natural gas contract was up eight cents at US$2.67 per mmBTU.

The February gold contract was down US$8.10 at US$1,835.50 an ounce and the March copper contract was down a penny at US$3.52 a pound.
