UPDATE: Death Toll Rises To 38 At Lagos 21-Storey Building Collapse Site

The number of deaths recorded at the site of the 21-storey building that collapsed on Monday on Gerrard Road, in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State, has increased to 38.

SaharaReporters had earlier published on Thursday that the figure of victims confirmed dead at the site of the crumbled building had risen to 36.

The 21-floor building that collapsed was one of 360 degrees towers in highbrow Lagos area.

However, news reaching SaharaReporters disclosed that two more fatalities had been recorded by Thursday afternoon.

Many people were trapped in the rubble, including the Managing Director, Fourscore Heights Limited, Mr Femi Osibona, said to be the owner of the building.

Emergency workers have evacuated nine persons alive from the debris of the building.

The survivors comprised eight males and one female.

The sad incident has generated controversy as the family and friends of the victims protested on Tuesday, saying rescue efforts were too slow.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, Minister of Works and former Lagos Governor, Babatunde Fashola, and Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba have all visited the scene of the collapsed building.

Sanwo-Olu has constituted a panel to look into the disaster and vowed to bring all those responsible to justice.

Police authorities have also vowed to punish those responsible for the collapse of the building.
