Amnesty International Slams Sowore’s Detention, Accuses Nigerian Authorities of Targeting Free Expression

Amnesty International Nigeria has issued a strong condemnation of the police detention of activist and politician Omoyele Sowore, asserting that the Nigerian government is unjustly targeting Sowore for exercising his right to freedom of expression.

This was made known in a statement by the organization on Tuesday. The human rights organization criticized the bail conditions imposed on Sowore, describing them as unconstitutional and a violation of his fundamental right to liberty.

Sowore, founder of Sahara Reporters, has been an outspoken critic of government policies, often advocating for transparency, accountability, and the protection of human rights in Nigeria.

Amnesty International reiterated its call for the Nigerian government to respect the rights of all citizens, noting that freedom of expression is a cornerstone of democracy and must be protected.

The organization stated: “Amnesty International condemns the arbitrary detention of activist Omoyele Sowore who is being targeted by the police for exercising his right to freedom of expression.

“The bail conditions imposed on him by the police are unconstitutional and contrary to the right to liberty.

“What the government is putting Sowore through, right now, shows that in Nigeria it is dangerous and risky to speak out for human rights and expose the truth. The Nigeria police must withdraw the unconstitutional bail conditions.”
