25 Imo Communities Reject Inclusion in Proposed Orlu State

At least 25 autonomous communities in the Ohaji nation of Imo State have firmly rejected their proposed inclusion in the creation of Orlu State, a new state proposed for Nigeria’s South-East geopolitical zone.

In a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, obtained by journalists on Tuesday, the Ogbako Ohaji People’s Forum, led by National President Fidelis Enya and Committee on State Creation Chairman Johnbosco Ben, expressed strong opposition to merging their communities with the Egbema community under the proposed Orlu State.

The group acknowledged the need for an additional state in the South-East to address regional imbalances in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, stating that such a move would promote equity and a sense of belonging. However, they vehemently opposed their inclusion in Orlu State, describing the proposal as an attempt to forcefully annex their communities without consultation.

Representing nearly 400,000 people across 25 autonomous communities and seven INEC political wards, the Ohaji nation criticized the lack of engagement by Orlu State promoters, calling the move disrespectful. They also labeled their historical inclusion in the Orlu Senatorial District as an “aberration” and a “political marriage” driven by greed and bribery.

The communities emphasized a lack of cultural or social ties with the Orlu people and reaffirmed their desire to remain in Imo State, citing proximity, religious, and boundary connections. The letter referenced a prior communication to the Senate on June 11, 2024, reiterating their stance against inclusion in Orlu State.

“We say a resounding no to our inclusion in the proposed Orlu State and a firm yes to remaining in Imo State, where we rightfully belong,” the letter stated. The group concluded by supporting the creation of a new state for the South-East but insisted that Ohaji would remain in Imo State or any state not centered on Orlu.

The Ohaji nation vowed to uphold the position of their forefathers and late leaders, standing firm against any attempt to include them in the proposed Orlu State.
