Rivers state local govt elections postponed to august 30

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, has postponed the 2025 Local Government Elections, shifting the date from August 9 to Saturday, August 30, 2025.

RSIEC Chairman, Michael Odey, made the announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting held today at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.

According to Odey, the decision to postpone the election became necessary due to the state of emergency recently declared in Rivers State.

He emphasized that the move was to ensure the safety of voters, electoral officials, and the integrity of the electoral process.

In addition to the new date, the commission also released a revised timetable and updated guidelines for the elections.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command has assured the public of its readiness to maintain law and order before, during, and after the polls.
