Court Sentences Swedish-Nigerian Woman To Four-Year Jail Term For Child Trafficking

A Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has sentenced a Swedish-Nigerian woman, Stephany Isaksson, to four years imprisonment for alleged child trafficking in Akwa Ibom State.

Isaksson, 43, was jailed on two counts of keeping an 18-month-old baby by means of fraud from one Uduak (currently at large), an offence which is contrary to section 13(2)(b) of trafficking in persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act 2015 and for receiving the custody of the baby, knowing that the infant would be subject to exploitation.

This is contrary to section 21 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act.

She hails from Mbiayon, in the Uruan LGA of Akwa Ibom, and has been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons in 2018 for trial.

The judge, on count two, sentenced Issakson to 2-year imprisonment or a fine of N250, 000.
