North American markets fall, loonie slides

TORONTO — North American stock markets fell in mid-day trading and the Canadian dollar slid despite gains in the TSX energy sector.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 81.64 points at 17,571.30.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 201.99 points at 30,101.38, the S&P 500 index was down 24.26 points at 3,698.22, while the Nasdaq composite was down 38.25 points at 12,726.49.

The Canadian dollar traded for 78.24 cents US compared with 78.63 cents US on Thursday.

The February crude contract was up 58 cents US at US$49.12 per barrel and the January natural gas contract was up 6.6 cents US at just over US$2.70 per mmBTU.

The February gold contract was down US$2.40 at US$1,888 an ounce and the March copper contract was up about 2.7 cents US at nearly US$3.63 a pound.
