Governor Ganduje stopped from constituting Council of Chiefs and usurping powers of Kano kingmakers by court

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has been stopped from constituting the Kano State Council of Chiefs and appointment of its members, days after he appointed Emir of Kano Malam Muhammad Sanusi II as Chairman of the Council of Chiefs.

Justice Ahmed T. Badamosi of Kano High Court presided over the case which had the Speaker of Kano State House of Assembly (first respondent), Kano State House of Assembly (second respondent), Governor Ganduje (third respondent), Attorney General of Kano State (fourth respondent), Tafida Abubakar Ila (fifth respondent), Ibrahim Abdulkadir Gaya (sixth respondent), Ibrahim Abubakar (seventh respondent) and Aminu Ado Bayero (eight respondent) as defendants. 

The suit’s plantiffs are Kano Emirate kingmakers which includes Yusuf Nabahani (Madakin Kano), Abdullahi Sarki Ibrahim (Makama Kano), Bello Abubakar (Sarkin Dawaki Mai Tuta) and Muktar Adnan (Sarkin Ban Kano).

Ganduje was restrained from taking away the functions and powers of the applicants under the Kano State Emirates Council Law, 2019.

Justice Badamosi said as he issued the order; 

“That an order of interim injunction, is hereby made restraining the third respondent, from taking away the functions and powers of the applicants under the Kano state emirates council law, 2019, or taking any steps whatsoever under the Law without consultation with the applicants pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.” 

The case was adjourned till December 17, 2019, for hearing of the motion on notice.
