Clémence Botino on Saturday December 14,  took home the prestigious Miss France crown.

The 22-year-old who became the third Miss Guadeloupe to win the beauty pageant, wowed the crowds through rounds of swimsuit struts, dancing and answers on social issues.

Botino was helped on stage by her rivals at the performance hall in Marseille, as her knees kept trembling in a state of shock.

Sylvie Tellier, a former Miss France and president of the beauty pageant said; 

“I had to support her, luckily there was a lot of people around”

Clémence Botino who was described as an intellectual and a ball of energy by organizers of the pageantry, insisted she would remain humble and kind.

She said; 

“Beauty is intelligence. It is about putting yourself forward and knowing who you are.”

Botino’s win however ignited controversies and skepticism about black women winning important pageant title. Recall in the last few months, major pageant titles have been won by black women. 

When Botino was crowned Miss France on Saturday, she joined a historic group of black women making history in the world of pageantry and they include; 2019 Miss World Toni-Ann Singh,  2019 Miss USA Cheslie Kryst, 2019 Miss Teen USA Kaliegh Garris, 2019 Miss America Nia Franklin and 2019 Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi.

However the big wins have raised concern among social media users. While some are questioning why black women are winning top titles, others are cheering black women for more wins.
