TORONTO — North American stock markets started the trading week by opening higher even as the price of oil plunged.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 18.97 points at 14,439.33.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 123.88 points at 23,899.15. The S&P 500 index was up 21.68 points at 2,858.42, while the Nasdaq composite was up 73.37 points at 8,707.89.
The Canadian dollar traded for 71.12 cents US compared with an average of 70.97 cents US on Friday.
The June crude contract was down US$4.83 at US$12.11 per barrel and the June natural gas contract was 12 cents at US$1.77 per mmBTU.
The June gold contract was down 50 cents at US$1,735.10 an ounce and the May copper contract was down about a penny at nearly $2.33 a pound.
