Chinwe Nnagbo Foundation Partners Ashley MacMillan Set To Build STEM School In Makoko

Chinwe Nnagbo Foundation (CNF), a not-for-profit has joined forces with Ashley Macmillan, an American philanthropist and educator to create a state-of-the-art school of science, technology, engineering and math in the Makoko area of Lagos state.

The initiative, which was borne out of the organization’s mission to promote quality science education in Nigeria and alleviate the poverty of underprivileged people and underserved communities in Africa at large is still in the works with plans to have it completed in 2022. It also seeks to build skills and talents in STEM and will afford pupils in the slum community access to cutting-edge technology education.

Speaking at a press conference recently, Dr Chinwe Nnagbo, a Nigerian dentist based in North America and the founder of the Chinwe Nnagbo Foundation stated ‘’We have implemented impactful projects in the past: Project Feed 1000, WASHCare Project, Educational Project, Women and Girls Empowerment Project and the STEM school in Makoko is the latest of our develpomental projects. The journey started five months ago when our team visited Makoko to assess the educational status of children in this slum. The waterways were grey-black and dirty, children who were expected to be in school at the time of the visit were paddling canoes and running errands for their parents’’

‘’This was a sad realization for us. We decided to organize a Makoko Vacation School in August 2020 through which school bags, books, nutritious foods, and scholarships were awarded to children. A further meeting with the stakeholders and parents of the community gave us more insight into the basic need of the community; a standard STEM world-class school to build the future of these children through technology and science; a vision to raise 5, 000 tech-savvy Makoko children in the next 5 years and that’s why we embarked on this project. We can’t achieve this alone and so we are calling on individuals and organizations to donate towards this noble cause. Education is free for kids in Canada, we can make it happen for the children in this slum ’’ she added

The design for the Science, Technology, Education, and Mathematics (STEM) world-class school will cost 20 million naira and include : Six blocks of classes for Nursery 1, Primary 6, A mobile toilet for teachers and pupils, fully equipped and functional ICT classrooms, fully functional sport centers, Teachers general room and a library.
