Russia, Ukraine Start First Peace Talks Since Conflict Began

High-level talks between Ukraine and Russia have started at the Belarussian border.

According to a report by Reuters, the talks are being held on the border with strong Russian ally Belarus, where a referendum on Sunday approved a new constitution ditching the country’s non-nuclear status at a time when the former Soviet republic has become a launchpad for Russian troops invading Ukraine.

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy describes the next 24 hours as “crucial” for Ukraine while the country’s military claims the pace of Russia’s assault has slowed.

Earlier the Ukrainian president’s office said Ukraine’s goal for the talks was an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine.

Russia’s political and economic isolation deepened on Monday as its forces met stiff resistance in Ukraine’s capital and other cities in the biggest assault on a European state since World War Two.

Meanwhile, UN rights boss Bachelet has said at least 102 civilians, including seven children, have died in Ukraine since the Russian invasion began.

Moreover, 304 have been injured. She, however, added that the real figure may well be “considerably higher”
