Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and president of Dangote Refinery, has accused powerful groups in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector of attempting to undermine the operations of his $20 billion, 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery in Lekki, Lagos.
Speaking at an investor forum in Lagos, as reported by global news platform Semafor, Dangote claimed that these “cabals,” who have profited from government-subsidized oil imports, are actively resisting the refinery’s success.
Dangote alleged that the groups have funded opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 decision to remove petrol subsidies, a policy announced during Tinubu’s inauguration in May 2023.
He further stated that these cabals are obstructing the refinery’s smooth operation in Nigeria. Despite the challenges, Dangote expressed confidence in overcoming the opposition, stating, “We’re fighting, and the fight is not yet finished. But I have been fighting all my life, and I am 100 percent sure I will win.”
