Former Presidential Adviser Warns of Crisis Over 2027 Nigerian Elections

Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, a former political adviser to Nigeria’s Vice President, has issued a stark warning about the potential consequences of a flawed 2027 general election, stating that anything less than a transparent electoral process could plunge the nation into unprecedented turmoil.

In a post on his verified X account on Monday, Dr. Baba-Ahmed urged Nigeria’s political leaders and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to address growing public concerns about the credibility of the upcoming elections. “Voices are being raised regarding integrity of the 2027 elections. Our leaders and INEC should listen. Anything short of the most transparent elections will produce neither winners nor losers. Rigging will risk plunging this country into its worst crises. No one wants that,” he wrote.

The warning comes as the House of Representatives considers a proposal to conduct all five elections—presidential, senatorial, House of Representatives, governorship, and House of Assembly—on a single day in 2027. If approved, the revised Electoral Act would grant INEC the authority to hold these polls simultaneously, a move aimed at streamlining the electoral process but raising concerns about logistical challenges and transparency.

As Nigeria approaches this critical electoral milestone, Dr. Baba-Ahmed’s remarks underscore the urgent need for reforms to ensure a free, fair, and credible election, with the nation’s stability hanging in the balance.
