Cardinals channel “Love Actually,” use cue cards to admit loss to Lions

Here’s the thing about the holidays: You have to be truthful.

Well, that’s if you adhere to the standards set in the 2003 Christmas movie, “Love Actually.” In one of the scenes near the end of the movie, Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and his wife Juliet (Keira Knightley) are watching TV when someone knocks on the door.

Juliet answers to find Mark (Andrew Lincoln), the best friend of Peter. Mark is holding a boom box and giant note cards. In those note cards, Mark tells Juliet that “at Christmas, you tell the truth” and that truth is “To me, you are perfect.”

So in the spirit of Christmas, the 10-4 Arizona Cardinals decided to tell a hard truth of their own: They actually lost to the Detroit Lions this past Sunday. Even though they closed as 13-point underdogs, according to Caesars Sportsbook, the previously 1-11-1 Lions beat the Cardinals in Detroit 30-12.

Clearly, the Cardinals wanted to quickly forget about the upset loss, failing to tweet out the final score from their official Twitter account.

Now, just a few days before Christmas, Arizona is ready to be honest about the game, “Love Actually”-style.

In an ode to the romantic comedy, the Cardinals’ mascot Big Red uses large cue cards to admit to last week’s defeat.

At least for Arizona, love is actually all around.
