Pope Leo has offered prayers for the victims of a “terrible massacre” in Benue State, Nigeria, where around 200 people, mostly internally displaced persons, were brutally k*lled in Yelwata, Guma LGA, on the night of June 13th to 14th. The victims had been sheltered by a local Catholic mission.
Speaking before the Sunday Angelus, the Pope called for “security, justice, and peace” in Nigeria, with a special focus on the rural Christian communities in Benue who he said have been “relentless victims of violence.”
Amnesty International Nigeria also condemned the attack, urging authorities to end the ongoing bloodshed in Benue and ensure justice for the victims.
There has been no official comment from the Presidency or Benue State Governor so far.
