Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is currently undergoing medical treatment in London, sources close to the family have confirmed.
Buhari reportedly travelled to the United Kingdom in April for what was initially a routine medical check-up but was later hospitalized after his condition worsened. While specific details about the illness and the hospital have not been disclosed, his media aide, Garba Shehu, has confirmed the situation.
Speaking to reporters, Shehu said, “Yes, the former president is unwell and has been receiving treatment in the UK. He had gone for his regular check-up but took ill. Thankfully, he is now recovering. We continue to pray for his full recovery.”
He undertook multiple medical trips to London while serving as president, including two visits in 2016 for an ear infection, and two extended stays in 2017. The latter included a 50-day medical leave beginning in January and another lasting 104 days — among the longest medical-related absences by a sitting Nigerian president.
Buhari’s frequent medical trips during his tenure sparked widespread debate and concern over his fitness to govern and the state of Nigeria’s healthcare system.
As of now, the former president is said to be recovering steadily.
