President Bola Tinubu has formally sworn in Dr. Nnanna Uzor Kalu as a commissioner on the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC), representing the South-East geopolitical zone.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, shortly before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
Kalu’s confirmation had faced delays earlier in the year due to a petition against his nomination. However, the Senate eventually cleared him after its Committee on Establishment and Public Service, chaired by Senator Cyril Fasuyi, submitted a report recommending his confirmation.
This followed a review by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions, which found no credible grounds to disqualify him.
In May, President Tinubu had administered the oath of office to NASC Chairman Saviour Enyiekere and other commissioners.
The FEC meeting also took a solemn turn as the council observed a minute’s silence in honour of the late Caleb Olubolade, a former Minister of Special Duties, Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, and Minister of Police Affairs during the Goodluck Jonathan administration. Olubolade reportedly collapsed while playing lawn tennis.
The announcement of his death was made to the council by Emanso Umobong Okop, Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Affairs Office, who represented the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Present at the council meeting were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Didi Walson-Jack, SGF representative George Akume, and several cabinet ministers.
