S&P/TSX composite up, while U.S. stock markets also rise; oil prices up

TORONTO — Gains in the energy, financial and industrial sectors led Canada’s main stock index higher in late-morning trading, while the price of oil also moved up.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 88.85 points at 14,919.59.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 320.06 points at 23,984.70. The S&P 500 index was up 40.80 points at 2,889.22, while the Nasdaq composite was up 115.85 points at 8,970.24.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.31 cents US compared with an average of 70.80 cents US on Wednesday.

The July crude contract was up US$1.24 at US$26.86 per barrel and the June natural gas contract was down a penny at US$1.93 per mmBTU.

The June gold contract was up US$11.10 at US$1,699.60 an ounce and the July copper contract was up two cents at US$2.37 a pound.
