TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index fell in early trading as the heavyweight financial and industrial sectors lost ground, while U.S. stock markets also moved lower.
The S&P/TSX composite index was down 62.56 points at 14,904.00.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 216.94 points at 24,114.38. The S&P 500 index was down 18.75 points at 2,911.05, while the Nasdaq composite was down 21.58 points at 9,099.74.
The Canadian dollar traded for 71.49 cents US compared with an average of 71.77 cents US on Friday.
The July crude contract was up a penny at US$26.18 per barrel and the June natural gas contract was up nearly five cents at nearly US$1.87 per mmBTU.
The June gold contract was down US$5.60 at US$1,708.30 an ounce and the July copper contract was down two cents at US$2.38 a pound.
